Rotimi Adeyemo, a Nigerian residing in Portadown, Northern Ireland, has been jailed for four years by a crown court in Belfast for physically assaulting his former wife after accusing her of rendering him impotent with a voodoo spell.
According to the Irish News, 52-year-old Adeyemo repeatedly attacked his unnamed ex-wife by strangulating, kicking and punching her in the presence of her eight-year-old daughter who begged him to stop. The Nigerian was also said to have used a knife on his victim.
Adeyemo was initially accused of attempted murder, but he denied the charges.

He later pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to his ex-partner with intent. The victim sustained serious injuries. Her lungs collapsed, her brain bled and her ribs, jaws and nose fractured.
After Adeyemo and the victim ended their relationship, the Nigerian had gone into a new relationship, dating one of the woman’s neighbours. This new relationship led to rancour between the father of six and his former wife.
Two days before assaulting the victim, the Nigerian had visited her home to accuse her of casting a voodoo spell on him to take away his potency.

Adeyemo returned to her house in August 2019 to grab her by the throat, leaving her unable to breathe or speak. The Nigerian was also said to have picked up a knife to cut her throat while assaulting her.
She, however, managed to grab a plate and smash it over Adeyemo’s head, causing a bleeding wound. This action got the Nigerian more furious and he resorted to kicking and punching her in the face till she lost consciousness.
The aftermath of the attack was captured on police footage.

During a police interview, Adeyemo insisted his former wife was into witchcraft. He said she had cast a voodoo spell on him. He also confessed to drinking half a bottle of Bailey’s before going to her house.
Adeyemo has been sentenced to four years in prison and another four years of supervised licence. Being on licence means somebody is still serving a prison sentence but can live in the community instead of being in incarceration.
The Nigerian was also issued a five-year restraining order preventing him from getting close to his former wife.
